Te Matakite o Aotearoa

Whatungarongaro he tangata, toi tu te whenua.
Man comes and goes, the land is permanent

In celebration of the declaration of independence the New Zealand Film Archive is proud to present a rare screening of Te Matakite o Aotearoa.

Directed by Geoff Steven and featuring such luminaries as Tama Poata, Eva Rickard and Whina Cooper, Te Matakite o Aotearoa is a vital record of one of the most significant events in our history.
The Maori Land march began on Sunday 13th September 1975 from Kapo Wairua (Spirits Bay in the far north) and from Te Hapua, New Zealand's northern most marae. It ended at Parliament Buildings in Wellington. The march protested the continuing alienation of Maori and explores the immense spiritual significance of land to the Maori.
